Bianca's story..

Bianca was born in Bari, Southern Italy, in 1953, the youngest of three children of a wood merchant and a housewife. She had a strict Catholic upbringing, receiving her early education in a convent school. However, she soon rebelled against her religious background, prefering to follow scientifically oriented studies. In 1978, she graduated from Bari University with honours in medicine and surgery. In 1979 she moved to England where she practiced first as a general surgeon and then an ophthalmologist until 2007. She abandoned her medical career in 2007 to go back to her native land and devote herself to painting full-time. A self-taught artist since adolescence, on returning to her homeland she followed formal art classes which opened new and wider horizons for her.

Looking at her work in chronological order, one can see that she uses art as a cathartic tool to confront and overcome the various traumas that life has thrown into her path. Now, a mature woman, she paints images that speak to her heart on canvas: mysterious, sinuous and enveloping shapes in brilliant colors that tell both sad and happy stories. Reality is transformed by her eyes and mind; it takes on a different meaning, which can sometimes be disturbing but always liberating. Having conquered her teenage ghosts, all she longs for is peace and harmony and to communicate her past and present experiences. This desire led her to publish “Poems & Drawings of my Youth”, Levante publishers, Bari, 2010, a unique book in which words are strongly intertwined with images. Its contents have a double impact on the reader: the drawings make us dream, the words make us think.

She began to put her work on public display in 2010.
